Test Overview
Test Methodology

GEM 5000-ion-selective electrode, amperometric electrode, electrical conductivity, and optical absorbance

Test Usage

Determination of blood gases (pH, pCO2, pO2, SO2, HCO3) sodium, potassium, chloride, ionized calcium, glucose, lactate, total hematocrit to aid in the diagnosis of a patient's acid/base status, electrolyte and metabolite balance, and oxygen delivery capacity.

Collection Instructions

Collect in heparinized syringe

Special Handling

Sample must be tested within 15 minutes of draw time and within 5 minutes if measuring lactate. Expel air bubbles and thoroughly mix syringe sample for > 30 seconds by repeatedly inverting and rolling syringe immediately after sample collection. Sample syringe must be capped to seal out air until sample is analyzed in order to maintain accurate Ph and blood gas values (pO2, pCO2, O2Hgb)

Normal Volume
3 mL whole blood
Minimum Volume
150 uL whole blood
Rejection Criteria
Specimens; older than 15 minutes, containing bubbles, having prolonged exposure to room air, and/or grossly hemolyzed.
