Test Usage

This test is used for the detection of hepatobiliary dysfunction and to aid in diagnosis of intrahepatic cholestatsis of pregnancy. This test should not be ordered for patients receiving bile acid therapy. Serum total bile acids testing is generally not suitable for differentiation among the various types of liver diseases.

< or = 10 umol/L (Reference Range applies to fasting total bile acid concentration)

On days testing is not performed, call clinical core laboratory chemistry 936 6702, and request stat testing, testing can be performed with manager/director approval.

Specimen Requirements
Collection Instructions

Collect blood in an SST tube from a fasting patient. Infants and pregnant patients do not need to fast. Centrifuge and refrigerate within 2 hours of collection.

Special Handling

Sample should be collected under fasting conditions (12 hour fast). Non-fasting will increase concentration of TBA. Infants and pregnant patients do not need to fast.
